Zimbabwe, November 07: Whitewater and Bush bashing
by Matt
On
our way to Vic Falls we stopped for a dawn game drive in Chobe National Park,
this was a definite highlight of game viewing so far giving us extreme close
ups on Elephants, Oryx, Zebras, Crocs and Hippos. This was especially gratifying
as only a week previously many of us had eaten these animals at a restaurant
in Windhoek, thankfully conservation programs are at work! Vic Falls passed
in a blur of whitewater, skydiving, horse riding and a sorry episode of drumming
that was strategically placed at the wrong end of a 3 hour booze cruise.
Our
first climbing destination in Zimbabwe was at Matopos National Park and this
was our first new routing opportunity in Africa. Everyone seized the chance
and 3 new crags were discovered and a variety of routes were climbed, some
sport, some trad and one mixed. This was a particularly good effort as many
of the truck dwellers have only been climbing for a short time and the temperatures
were not conducive to climbing, even 45 minute approaches felt epic! There
seemed to be endless potential for new routing in this area but sadly we needed
to move on to Harare.
En route to Harare we stopped at Antelope Park which is definitely recommended if you like your African adventure to be extremely luxurious. We ate until the point of explosion and then enjoyed the amazing experience of walking with lions. This was rather more exciting than we expected as the cubs we walked with weighed 15 stone each and were quite boisterous! Nevertheless we all survived a truly amazing experience.
That’s all for now and we are looking forward to more new routing opportunities in Zimbabwe before sampling the laidback delights of Malawi..
